In recent years Correios, the Brazilian Post Office, has been very active in developing services aimed at SMEs in the digital domain, starting with a revamped delivery service (e-Sedex), support for international shipping through "Exporta fácil", payment facilities and even an e-commerce platform, CorreiosNet Shopping.
The Exporta fácil service has been so successful that the Inter-American Development Bank has agreed to fund a replica of the concept in other countries in Latin America, via the IIRSA initiative and the Multilateral Investment Fund. This will dramatically improve quality, reliability and efficiency of delivery services in the participating countries, thus opening opportunities cross border trade.
According to a report by e-Bit, Brazilian retail e-commerce is set to grow to R$ 6.4bn (US$ 4bn) this year (2007) up from 4,4bn in 2006. Among the 33 million Internet users in Brazil, 9.8 million will have purchased goods (books, magazines, CDs, DVDs, and electronic goods are the main categories) over the Internet.
We had a chance to interview Antonio Braquehais, head of the Internet Business department of Correios during the PYMETIC 1007 Fair. Due to We technical problems we had conduct the interview in two separate sessions.
He also delivered an interesting presentation of the Correios services in a speach at the Universal Postal Union:
